((Xav, here's the thread! I'm sorry it's so late in coming!))
"STEP TWO THREE FOUR! JUMP SIX SEVEN EIGHT!" Blasting out a bold cadence Shujin marched forward with a jaunty step, a true pirate's grin etched across his face for the first time in ages. Today was special - because for the first time since he was a kit, he'd get to go rapelling down the mountainside! He'd brought his firmest, strongest ropes in anticipation, and carried them along gleefully as he kept ascending the peaks. "C'mon, mate, we're almost there!"

Xav trotted swiftly along beside Shujin, but somehow gave the impression she was trudging along. Why had she let the irrepressible pirate persuade her to do this? Why had she been in Ambermill in the first place? She shook her head, eying the ropes dubiously. Though she’d been living in the forest much of her free life, she’d never been rapelling. "C'mon, mate, we're almost there!"
Lyra blinked sleepily at the afternoon sun and tucked her head under her wing again. She couldn't wait for the night.
The corsair cupped his eyes, gazing skyward. The moon was barely visible on the horizon. "'Urry, if we dun make it in time, we'll 'ave tah wait till the 'morrow! Jus' a li'l farther'n we'll be at the peak fer a peek!"

Xav changed her pace, eager despite herself for a glimpse of the land around from the heights of the mountain. She'd never climbed one before, limiting her wanderings to forests and plains. Reaching the top, she turned towards the west and gasped.
Lyr'a! The sunset! The owl lifted her head briefly, blinked once or twice, and said for all to hear: 'Oh yes. Beautiful. Just beautiful. I'll tell you what is even better. The moonrise. Now let me sleep!'
Xav laughed, reaching back to pat smooth the ruffled feathers of the owl riding in her pack. Isn't in better than on? She'd certainly fallen off less than when she rode on top of the pack.

"'Ere we be, lass!" Shujin stood before the precipece, marvelling at its sheer depth. It seemed to sink down to the very core of the Realms, its bottom fathoms from the pirate's vision. The wind whistled a shrill tune as it whipped through the rocky crevasse. This would be a rush for the ages. "Okies... the treasure's somewhere at the bottom o' yon abyss, then! So, ye wanna start out this eve, or wait 'till the sun rises anew?" he said, conferring final judgement (as was polite and proper) to the fair lass beside him.

The sunlight would not come soon for them, the bloodstained eyes mused. Beside him, a shiver of darkness moved, opening eyes as deep and venomous as any vortex in this world. He placed a hand on this living shadow and smiled, whispering.

Xav checked the sun's position. "Tomorrow. The sun will be down before we get to the bottom, and it will be dark down there." She slung off her pack, leaning it carefully against a boulder. Opening a compartment, she took out fire stones, opening another, she reached in and took Lyr'a out, placing her on the boulder. The owl shuffled her feathers and started to preen, waking up to greet the moon as Xav started to make a fire.

Shujin, meanwhile, trotted closer to the edge of the precipice, letting out a shrill whistle as he peered into his fathomless depths. "Boy aye.... sure is deep... a mate fell in, no tellin' what'd 'appen tah 'em!" ...There's somethin' 'ere... He suddenly thought as the darkscar twinged. Something sinister was nearby... something dark.
