A Drinking Break « Thread Started on Feb 24, 2008, 3:26pm »
A cloaked and hooded person walked into the tavern as the sky was about an hour from actually beginning to darken into night. Whomever this was wanted to avoid being seen. A minute later, another cloaked and hooded person entered the tavern. The first had already had their drink and was sitting in a darken corner splashed with the occasional light from the fire in the fire place. The second retrieved their drink and looked around for a seat and spotted the only open seat was with the first person. They walked over and gestured to ask if he could sit there. The first nodded, and pushed out a chair.
"You always seem to avoid being seen," the second said.
"I've done that for years, Zaro. There's really no point on letting the skill die out because of what I do."

As the two figures conversed, a strangely garbed figure entered the tavern, leaning on a strange staff with a globe atop it. Judging from his strange red robes and the books stuffed inside a satchel strapped across his shoulder, this man was a spell caster. Also, his clothes were of a fine make, suggesting he was wealthy. His long white hair was well taken care of, and a hawk lay perched on his shoulder. The brown feathered hawk keenly eyed everyone in the room with his large, globe-like eyes. The mage, however, ignored the throngs of people seated at various tables and at the bar. He calmly walked up to the bar and layed out some coin, ordering a simply beefy broth with apple cider. With this done, he seated himself near where the two dark figures were conversing.
This man was Infero Sunstrider, a talented Air Mage known more for his sharp tongue and cynical nature then his actual magical skills. He seemingly payed no heed to the two dark figures in the corner, putting off an air of nonchalance and uncaring attitude. However, in reality, he was listening intently to what they might say. Those who secreted themselves into a dark corner to discuss business usually had very interesting tales and predicaments, predicaments that he might be able to profit from.

"You've developed that skill..."
"Because of the elders' decision for inaction."
The first fell silent as a new person walked into the tavern. She had learned to keep weary tabs on those that were in the same room with her. That included those that have just entered. A small animal had managed to enter the tavern at the feet of the one that just entered and found it's owner by smell. It lept into the female's lap and a paw went down to pet it before bring it back up.
"There is no need to let useful skills die out," the female said now in a hushed voice.
"Such skills are no use to ones in high places," came the reply in the same hushed way.

The mage kept quiet in his seat, calmly overhearing most of what was said without trying to let on he was eavesdropping. He was somewhat surprised at the animal that came scurrying in to plop itself on one of the stranger's laps. This meant at least one of them was a caster, which meant that the work might be related to spells. His heart fluttering in his chest, Infero tried to keep himself calm. When it came to finding powerful magic artifacts, Infero was the most eager of any mage. He was on his own personal quest for power, power to overcome his frail body, worn out by the illness that plagued him night and day. As if on cue, the brightly garbed spell caster began to cough roughly into his hand. His feathered companion, still perched on his shoulder, gave out a strange, piercing whistle, as if in concern for his master. However, the attack soon subsided, and Infero was just fine.
The meal he had ordered was soon placed before him, and he began to spoon the broth into his mouth slowly, trying to savor the taste. It wasn't the best he'd had, but it was a meal he could order quickly, and ebbed his unusually large appetite. The apple cider, for now, lay untouched. He would leave that off until a little later.

The two in the corner fell silent as the man began coughing. One was a bit worried he would actually die from it. The two Juna wondered why he was here other than listening on their conversation. The furzel's head popped up when it heard the bird's whistle, on edge with its fight or flight. But when nothing happened, it relaxed with its head on its crossed front legs on Yanyar's lap.
"Such skills are needed for those in high places. One can never knows when such skills would be needed. There is no need to turn into those round bellied Human nobles; if you know what I'm talking about," the female Juna said.
"I do. That still doesn't..."
"I grew up in the wild, don't ask me to lose the skills that kept me alive; and don't you forget that."
The conversation was still hushed between the two as they took turns drinking their ale. There was no use arguing that the two seem to have their own view on whatever skill they were talking about.

Infero paused in his eating to stroke the feathers of his animal companion, who let out a low whistle that resembled crooning. Their meeting had been a strange one. The Hawk, named Tempest, had been in a fight with an eagle over some food. Normally, an animal of his size went nowhere near a hungry eagle. However, this hawk had an unusual spirit, fighting the eagle anyway and receiving a sound thrashing. He was found nearly half dead by the cynical, sarcastic mage in the forest, barely clinging to his life. The mage nursed the brave fighter back to health slowly, an act that most people thought unusual about Infero, due to his nasty disposition toward his fellow man. As the hawk and the mage spent time with one another, they began to sense a bond, a strange kinship that both beings shared. They had been together ever since.
The conversation between the two Juna was still quite hushed, perhaps because they suspected him eavesdropping. He had been discreet, but he couldn't blame them for being suspicious; a brightly garbed traveler carrying a staff and accompanied sitting near your table is quite hard to ignore, and these two seemed wary of strangers. Deciding to multitask to throw them off and to catch up on his studies, Infero pulled out a text of magic from his stachel, opened it to a bookmarked page, and began scrolling through it's contents. While reading, he kept his ears open while also keeping his eyes on the words in front of him.

The Furzel lept off its owner's lap, dashed over to the bar counter, and upon leaping onto it, stalked over to the man's plate. It seemed to have its eye on a piece of his food, and seeing how the man was otherwise preoccupied with his book, the animal decided to take a chance on taking a free piece of food. The two Juna were otherwise in another discussion about the state of affairs of the Juna kingdom and of the different clans. The Furzel, Reao, was no older than a year; having been left by its mother when a strong storm had ripped through the forest. Yanyar had found it when looking for firewood. She took him in and Reao had taken to the Matriarch and she has kept him around for some company when she needed it. Reao glanced at the book reading man and crept closer to the food, ever weary of him; ready to jump away if attacked.
